Tony Romo made history with his new contract with CBS, becoming the highest-paid analyst in television history. After missing out on the chance to land Romo, ESPN isn't taking chances on their second-best option. In an attempt to improve Monday Night Football, ESPN is ready to offer Peyton Manning up to $20 million per year.

The reports of Manning's possible deal was first made by Michael McCarthy of FrontOfficeSports.com. Prior to Romo signing a multi-year deal worth $18 million per year to remain with CBS, ESPN was getting ready to offer him the lead-analyst role on Monday Night Football.

Over the past few years, Romo has excelled alongside Jim Nantz at CBS. Since joining CBS, Romo has received rave reviews for his performance as a commentator.

However, with him no longer on the open market, ESPN is trying to hit a home run. Besides Manning, ESPN is also hoping to pair him with Al Michaels of NBC.

Following his retirement in 2015, many thought Manning would consider a career as an analyst. Due to his knowledge of the game and his humor, Manning has been targeted by multiple networks before.

One of the reasons why Peyton turned down offers from those networks was due to his brother Eli being in the league. But with Eli joining him in retirement, Peyton could look to finally join the booth.

At the same time, he did have a show on ESPN+ in 2019 called “Peyton's Places.” Given that, he's already had some experience working with the worldwide leader in sports.

Even though he's turned down ESPN in the past, it remains to be seen what the details of those offers were. In light of that, it's hard to believe they offered him upwards of $20 million before.
