Former NFL linebacker Geno Hayes has passed away at the age of 33, according to WCTV in Tallahassee.
Hayes reportedly succumbed to a two-year battle with a chronic liver disease that had reached a Stage 3 level. Prior to his passing, he moved to his parent's house in Georgia and was placed under hospice care last week. According to the report, Hayes was in and out of the hospital over 20 times this past year as his disease got worse. The former sixth-round pick was said to have gone from 220 pounds to 150 pounds throughout his sickness.
This is definitely unfortunate news. It's sad to see anyone so young go at such an early age and with apparently so much life to live.
After playing his college ball with Florida State, Hayes played seven seasons in the NFL. He was drafted as the 175th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hayes started in 42 of 56 games in four seasons with the Buccaneers. He then spent one year with the Chicago Bears in 2012 before winding up his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars for a couple of seasons.
Geno Hayes finished his career with six interceptions, 401 tackles, and 10.0 sacks.
Our thoughts and prayers go to the Hayes family for their loss.
