On Tuesday, the NFL is expected to announce a four-year partnership with the popular brand Oakley, who will be the source of the league's visors for at least the foreseeable future. Not only that, but the NFL is going back on their word—sort of—as the league is gearing up to allow slightly tinted visors going forward.

We can filter light in a way to leverage your natural visual acuity,” Wayne Chumbley, head of Oakley’s Vision Performance Lab, said. “So we see colors—red, green and blue—naturally. If you can heighten your sensitivity in areas, it can create a lot of color contrast which creates a better depth perception scenario for you. So with Prism clear, what we’re doing is we’re eliminating areas of color confusion.”
“Between green and red there’s an area of cone overlap and cone sensitivity, and if we knock down that area of overlap, you actually see all the colors better.”
Previously, the NFL only allowed its players to wear clear visors in regulation games, though many fans may have noticed that the league had appeared to become more lenient ever since last season's Pro Bowl. It is also worth noting that some players have already noticed a positive difference upon switching over to Oakley products.
“Just going from a regular visor that we had before to this visor, I know definitely preseason playing night games it’s much better,” Carolina Panthers wide receiver Curtis Samuel recently said. “It dims the lights a little bit. It allows you to have a better opportunity to track the ball down. It just feels better overall. It’s clearer to look out of.”
While Samuel is unlikely to be alone on this one, it is hard to beat the combination of performance and fashion these days.
