All 32 teams in the NFL have begun training camps and the league is pleased with the number of players that are currently on the COVID-19 reserve list. After an influx of players being placed on the list to begin training camp, the NFL is down to 22 players on the COVID-19 reserve list.
Players that are placed on the COVID-19 reserve list either tested positive or have been in contact with someone that has. Matthew Stafford and Gardner Minshew were both placed on the list to begin training camp. Both of them have since been activated from the list and are back practicing with their teams.
On just the second day of training camp, the NFL reported 24 players on the reserve/COVID-19 list. However, the league is reporting the lowest number of players on the list since the first day of training camp.
Article Continues BelowOf course, that number could be subject to change once teams begin full-contact practices. Plus, it remains to be seen if there is an upward shift of players placed on the list when the season begins next month.
Unlike the NBA, NHL, and the WNBA, the NFL has chosen not to enforce a ‘bubble' during the 2020 season. Therefore, the league has already stated that they expect positive tests to take place during the regular season.
Seeing that football is a contact sport, it's going to be tough for the NFL to limit risk for its players. While the league has some more kinks to work out, the number of players on the COVID-19 reserve list is a positive sign for the upcoming season.
