Cam Newton is still without a team, and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport thinks that is something that could last for quite a while.
During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Rapoport said that Newton could end up waiting until August before he signs with a new club.
Rapoport notes that the key for Newton is that he wants to compete for a starting job. As of right now, there don't appear to be any truly viable options for the quarterback, but Rapoport says that perhaps an injury to another signal-caller will prompt a team to give Newton a shot sometime during the summer.
Newton was released by the Carolina Panthers last month.
The Los Angeles Chargers and New England Patriots were immediately named as potential destinations for the soon-to-be-31-year-old, but the Chargers have certainly been dragging their feet while the Patriots seem to be leaning toward Jarrett Stidham as their starting quarterback in 2020.
Cam Newton played in just two games this past season due to a foot injury that ultimately required offseason surgery.
The Auburn product entered the NFL as a No. 1 overall pick of the Panthers back in 2011 and quickly established himself as one of the league's brightest young stars, making the Pro Bowl in his rookie campaign.
Then, in 2015, Newton had the best season of his career, winning the MVP award and leading Carolina to a 15-1 record and a Super Bowl appearance.
Since then, however, injuries and poor performance in general have derailed Newton's career. In addition to his foot procedure, Newton has also undergone a pair of shoulder surgeries since the end of 2016.
