More NFL jobs are opening up as the offseason for several teams develop and the coaching searches are in full swing. Despite several hot coordinators may be getting some attention, there are only a few true quality guys available for teams looking for their next head man.
On Peacock and Williamson, the daily NFL podcast on the Locked On Podcast Network, hosts Brian Peacock and Matt Williamson discuss how few men know how to be an NFL head coach.
Article Continues BelowPeacock: The interesting ones to me out there are Caldwell and Marvin Lewis because we do not often say this but there are 32 head coaches at any given time but there are probably only 40 men walking the planet right now and some of them are retired that really understand how to win in this league. You know, how to consistently put out a competitive team no matter what and I think Lewis and Caldwell are two of those 40. Like, I am not sure Zac Taylor is yet. He may get there one day. I am picking on Zac Taylor by the way. He is just the young guy who does not have a great track record in the NFL. Even though a lot of these coordinators become head coaches, that does not mean that they understand how to win year after year seven-plus games a season. I do think Lewis, despite awful circumstances with the Bengals, when he took the Bengals job, they did not have a scout. They had zero scouts and he put a competitive product on the field. Caldwell overcame some things in Detroit. Like, give those guys Deshaun Watson and a couple of years, they may do a good job.
