The Washington Redskins selected quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Despite that, Haskins wasn't the starter at the beginning of the year. At first it was hard to complain as Case Keenum played well in the first two games. Once Keenum started struggling, things spiraled quickly.

This led to a lot of fans begging for Haskins. Meanwhile, reports were coming out that he wasn't even close to ready.

Once Jay Gruden was fired, the reports didn't change much. However, interim head coach Bill Callahan was at least giving hope saying that the rookie was improving. The bottom line was still the same though, Haskins wasn't ready. Now the Redskins might not have a choice.

Case Keenum left their Week 8 game against the Minnesota Vikings with a concussion. That thrust Haskins into the game at halftime.

Now he's practicing as the starter because Keenum might not be ready for their Week 9 matchup with the Buffalo Bills.

The good news is, according to Les Carpenter of the Washington Post, Haskins has impressed in practice this week.

This is a good step forward. Especially considering the talks of playbook struggles and the defense taking it easy on the rookie in practice. Haskins needs to get acclimated to the NFL and the best way to do that is to play.

Even if Keenum ends up getting the start in Week 9, this time is extremely valuable for Haskins. He's getting all the reps with the first team and practicing as if he'll be the starter. That should help Washington gauge where he's at better, as well as help him improve.

So far, it appears to be working.
