The Washington Redskins own the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft this week, and the general consensus most of the way has been that they will ultimately take Ohio State defensive lineman Chase Young.
But could things change?
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network is reporting that the Redskins have been getting calls from teams interested in trading up to the No. 2 spot and are listening. Rapoport notes that Washington isn't “intent” on moving down but that other clubs are laying the groundwork for a potential deal.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network adds that the Redskins are aware that they are more than just one player away, so the sense around the league is that the No. 2 selection “can be bought.”
Article Continues BelowThis falls in line with the rumors that surfaced earlier this offseason that Washington could potentially take University of Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa at that spot. The Redskins have Dwayne Haskins under center, so from a general perspective, drafting Tagovailoa wouldn't make much sense. However, that could have been Washington leaking that information to gain leverage in trade talks from teams looking to move up.
And as Pelissero says, the Redskins are obviously more than one player away, so even if they stay at No. 2 and take Young, he isn't instantly going to solve all of their problems (although he would fill a pretty big gap).
From that standpoint, it would make sense for Washington to trade down and acquire more picks to fill as many holes as possible.
The Redskins went just 3-13 in 2019.
