Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb has been a fixture on the team’s offense for over the past several years, but rumors have recently sprouted about the possibility of him getting shipped to another squad.

Ian Rapoport has since dispelled those Cobb trade chatters, saying that the veteran wideout is not on the trade block despite several teams knocking on Green Bay’s door. Meanwhile, Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac tried to look at these rumors from a practical and financial sense, saying that the Packers’ cap space could benefit greatly in the event that they split ways with Cobb via a trade.

Should the Packers trade WR Randall Cobb, they’ll take on $3.65M in dead cap, clearing $9.06M of space, his salary for the team who would be acquiring him.

It’s an honest take on the matter and one that makes sense, especially if the Packers have any plans of extending Aaron Rodgers’ contract. Rodgers wants a big extension deal signed after seeing Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons put ink on a titanic $30 million per year deal last May.

That being said, trading Cobb might strike a wrong chord with Rodgers, who was not clearly happy when the Packers released Jordy Nelson back in March.

Randall Cobb has battled injuries and inconsistencies in the past two seasons. Granted that he had to play alongside a backup in Brett Hundley, who took over as the team’s starter after Rodgers went down with a collarbone injury, Cobb’s production in 2017 was not too inspiring. In 15 games, he only had 653 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 66 receptions. His 9.9 yards per catch last year is the lowest since his rookie season in 2011.

In any case, Cobb would like to have a strong 2018 campaign to boost his value in the free agency next year.
