The Philadelphia Eagles are going into the 2019 NFL season without the same assurance behind quarterback Carson Wentz. Although quarterback Nick Foles is no longer around to provide quality depth, Wentz does not plan on switching up his game.
The Eagles have had Wentz largely working from the pocket throughout training camp and the offseason. According to ESPN's Tim McManus, he says he will still need to use his legs when necessary:
“I feel good just going through my reads, throwing a completion and moving on,” Wentz said. “When I need to make a guy miss in the pocket, when I need to get out and make a play, that's still definitely going to be a big part of my game.”
Wentz's ability to make plays with both his arm and his legs is what helped him establish himself as one of the most promising, young quarterbacks in the league. It is clear that he will be looking to utilize both of his attributes whenever the time comes.
Although it is encouraging to see Wentz have no second thoughts about his ability to take off under pressure, Philadelphia would much rather have their franchise quarterback do most of his work from the pocket. The more he scrambles, the more prone he will be to sustaining further injury.
As talented as Wentz is, he has struggled to stay healthy so far in his young career. With Foles gone, they no longer have the luxury of having a solid contingency plan in store which means he will need to remain as healthy as possible in order for the Eagles to have a chance at the playoffs.
