The 2018 NFL season is finally set to kick-off with a matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons. Although the Eagles had been the favorites to win up to this point, it appears there has been a sudden change-of-heart in bettors around the league.

Philadelphia opened as the 5.5-point favorites against Atlanta. However, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, the Falcons are now favored to win.

The defending Super Bowl champion Eagles are now underdogs against the Falcons in tonight’s NFL opener. Although the Eagles opened as high as 5.5-point favorites in some sports books, so much money has come in on Atlanta that there are now books listing the Falcons as 1.5-point favorites.

Needless to say, this could be taken as a sign of disrespect to the defending Super Bowl champs. Although the Eagles are a little banged up going into the season opener, they still boast much of the same talent from that championship squad. Furthermore, Philadephia still has Atlanta's number from last season when they defeated them in the NFC Divisional Round.

It is difficult to gauge the reasoning behind the sudden shift in bets. It may be because quarterback Nick Foles will be starting in place of Carson Wentz. The Super Bowl MVP showed some serious signs of a championship hangover in the preseason. Head coach Doug Pederson was admittedly frustrated with how the offense as a whole had performed. Meanwhile, the Falcons still boast one of the more talented rosters in the league so a win on opening night would not be too far-fetched.
