Eagles HC Doug Pederson ‘very encouraged’ by Carson Wentz’s progress

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson is "very encouraged" by Carson Wentz's progress thus far in training camp.

There has been plenty of optimism surrounding the surgically-repaired knee of quarterback Carson Wentz. Head coach Doug Pederson confirmed that notion following the first week of training camp.

Wentz has been an active participant in each of the practice sessions they have had thus far. According to Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ Advance Media, Pederson is pleased with the progress he has made:

“I am very encouraged with where he is at. What I saw last week is enough to ease my mind. I don't need to see him in 11-on-11. He is progressing extremely well. I don't want to subject him to any kind of setback or anything like that, I want to keep him progressive and moving forward. Those couple days we had with him, we were very excited.”

Peterson's comments largely echoed Wentz's recent update on his knee. Needless to say, it is encouraging to see that he is not the only one who feels good about his progression.

Still, this does not mean that Wentz will be good to go by the start of the 2018 NFL season. Despite his optimism, he has ceded the decision to the team's medical staff and whenever they decide to clear him.

Fortunately, there is no rush to get him back thanks to the presence of quarterback Nick Foles. Foles established himself as the gold standard for backups in the NFL and it goes without saying that he is more than capable of holding down the fort while Wentz recovers. That said, it is safe to assume that Philadelphia will continue to take a cautious approach with his return.
