Can Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz re-assume his place as one of the top MVP candidates in the NFL? ESPN seems to think so.
ESPN NFL experts have Wentz finishing second in the 2019 MVP race, right behind Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
For a guy who has played just one full season in three years, that is certainly a risky pick, but Wentz has shown that when he is healthy, he is capable of being one of the league's best signal-callers.
Wentz played in just 11 games before bowing out with a back injury last year, throwing for 3,074 yards, 21 touchdowns, and seven interceptions while completing 69.6 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 102.2.
The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at North Dakota State, was originally selected by the Eagles with the second overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.
He started all 16 contests during his rookie year, finishing with 3,782 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 14 picks while completing 62.4 percent of his throws and registering a passer rating of 79.3.
Then, in 2017, Wentz was in the midst of an MVP-caliber season before suffering a torn ACL in Week 14. Leading up to the injury, Wentz had thrown for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, completing 60.2 percent of his passes and recording a passer rating of 101.9, earning a Pro Bowl selection as a result.
Of course, Nick Foles took over for Wentz after his injury and ended up leading Philadelphia to its first ever Super Bowl title.
But now, Foles is no longer a member of the Eagles, so the pressure is on Wentz to play a full season.
