The “Philly Special 2.0” the Philadelphia Eagles pulled off Thursday night in their 18-12 win over the Atlanta Falcons has been the talk of the town so far in Week 1 of the regular season. Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson took a jab at Tom Brady's pass-catching skills on the team broadcast after the game. His New England Patriots attempted a similar play against the Eagles in Super Bowl LII earlier this year, and Johnson made sure to bring it up:
Eagles OT Lane Johnson on Nelson Agholor’s throw to Nick Foles, tells team broadcast it wasn’t Philly Special: “It was the same play the Patriots used — the one that Tom dropped.”

Unlike the Eagles' play last night, the Patriots were unsuccessful with their trickery. Brady was wide open and the ball slipped right through his fingers, just like the Lombardi Trophy eventually would.
Here are the two plays side-by-side:

Johnson took pleasure in taking a shot at the five-time Super Bowl champ as his Eagles start the year off undefeated. The Patriots are undermanned at wide receiver this year, so maybe Brady will get a few more chances to make a catch before the season is up. The two teams teams will not meet this regular season, but may clash again if they both make deep playoff runs like last year.
The Eagles overcame adversity in Week 1, but they have a host of talented teams they still need to play on their schedule. They'll take things one week at a time as they prepare for more challenges down the road, but victory sure does taste sweet right now.
