Article Continues BelowThe Eagles announced on Monday that the team exercised the fifth-year option on franchise quarterback Carson Wentz's contract for the 2020 season.
The second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Wentz has completed 63.7 percent of his pass attempts for 10,152 yards, 70 touchdown passes, and a 92.5 QB rating in 40 career games. His peers named him as the N0. 3 player in the entire league on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2018.
NBC Sports Philadelphia's Dave Zangaro also chimed in on Wentz's fifth-year option.
This move is simply an insurance policy as the Eagles try to sign Wentz to a long-term deal.
Every first-round player has a fifth-year option written into their contract. Nelson Agholor is about to play this season on his. If Wentz does play the 2020 season on his fifth-year option, he'll make $22,783,000 that season with a cap hit to match.
But it seems likely the two sides will have worked out a long-term extension by then. The fifth-year option money is guaranteed for injury now, but it's not guaranteed in full until the start of the league year in 2020.
The 26-year-old Wentz enters his fourth NFL season. The Eagles exercising his fifth-year option should pave the way for a more lucrative, long-term deal.
Hopefully, Wentz will help the Eagles win a second Super Bowl Trophy within the next few years.
