Through the last several months, the Philadelphia Eagles have continued to monitor Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Wentz's recovery from a torn ACL and LCL that has him possibly on pace to return for the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.
However, it is a process that former Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Tony Romo believes that Wentz shouldn't rush to get back on the field from, via Glenn Erby of Eagles Wire.
[Wentz] shouldn’t rush to come back. It’s a long season, and one or two games isn’t going to make a difference. I think they’re good enough to contend without him. Obviously, they won a championship last year without him, so they’ll be fine the first few weeks of the season if [Nick] Foles has to start.
I think [Wentz] is obviously extremely talented. He just needs to be in a position where he feels comfortable on the football field.
It was an honest answer from a former star quarterback, who’s guilty himself, of rushing back from injury and doing more harm than good.
There has been some steady progress made in the rehab process that has pushed Wentz possibly in the position to return to the field much sooner than the initial timeline for recovery for this type of injury. He hasn't had any setbacks along the way and has recently been cleared for 11-on-11 action practice.
At the same time, this is an injury that could linger or lead to another injury if he is brought back on the field sooner than he should be. Wentz is secure in being the future of the franchise under center for the next decade in Philadelphia, which has heightened the level of importance in moving forward with this situation in the proper manner.
Ultimately, it is on Wentz's shoulders to know when his body feels completely ready to give it a go without any limitations. These next several days should be telling of where he is at physically heading into Week 1.
