Following the first Super Bowl win in franchise history, the Philadelphia Eagles head into the offseason with a few key questions surrounding their roster. One of which could surround the long-term future of veteran tight end Brent Celek, who just wrapped up his 11th season in the league.
Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice recently speculated that the 33-year-old is considering stepping away from the game due to the wear and tear his body has dealt with for more than the last decade.
Article Continues BelowThe Eagles are set with Zach Ertz as a starter at tight end for the foreseeable future, but their excess of depth is likely to erode this offseason. Brent Celek's body has taken a pounding over 11 years with the Eagles. Now that he has a ring, there's a thinking that he will retire. Meanwhile, Trey Burton is set to become a free agent and may make starter money on the open market. The Eagles aren't going to be able to afford to match that, if so.
With Burton and Celek both potentially no longer on the roster, the Eagles will need to fortify that position, ideally with at least one guy who can block well.
Celek has been relegated to being essentially the third-string tight end with the emergence of Zach Ertz and Trey Burton over the last couple of seasons. Despite that, he has proven to be one of their most dependable players over the duration of his career, missing just one game over that span while tallying 398 catches for 4,998 receiving yards and 31 touchdown receptions. He just finished up the final year of his three-year, $13 million deal that would put him on the open market in free agency.
His potential retirement would hurt the depth the Eagles have at the position, as he has been a stable factor as a receiver and blocker. This, coupled with the possible departure of Burton, would put the team in a major bind without a #2 tight end behind Ertz.
If Celek were to go this route, he would finish his productive NFL career on top with a Super Bowl win.
