The Philadelphia Eagles' running back corps, like much of the team's various position groups, was a patchwork job last year. And the defending NFC East division champs are seeking to continue adding talent this offseason by signing a veteran to the backfield.
Free agent running backs Devonta Freeman (formerly of the Atlanta Falcons), Carlos Hyde (formerly )of the Houston Texans, and familiar face LeSean McCoy — most recently of the Super Bowl LIV champion Kansas City Chiefs — are all on the Eagles' radar, per Tim McManus of ESPN.
The Eagles' current depth chart at running back includes rising sophomore Miles Sanders, a second-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft who rushed for 818 yards for three touchdowns in his debut season, practice squad-promoted rusher Boston Scott and 25-year-old New Jersey native Corey Clement.
However, per McManus, the job isn't finished for general manager Howie Roseman and Philadelphia's front office, who seek to upgrade the offense in 2020 with a veteran presence in the backfield.
Roseman and the Eagles already made a stunning move by selecting Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round of last month's draft, invariably to back up franchise signal-caller Carson Wentz and help the offense. But there are areas that need to be improved in order to build off of what people saw as a fluke division win and early, first-round exit at home against the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Wild Card game.
A reunion with “Shady” McCoy is most interesting considering he just came off a Super Bowl run with former Eagles coach Andy Reid (McCoy didn't appear in the title game). McCoy was a three-time Pro-Bowler and two-time All-Pro First Team selection while with Philadelphia, spending the first six seasons of his professional tenure in the City of Brotherly Love.
