Recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers baffled some NFL fans by trading one of their defensive stars in Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Miami Dolphins in a move that brought back cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Fitzpatrick had long been a stalwart of the Steelers' vaunted defensive backfield but now, the team will try to replace him by committee at the safety position.
One person who is up for the task is veteran safety Juan Thornhill, who has won two Super Bowl championships in his NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs.
“It's just me having to step up a little bit more, which I think I'm very capable of,” said Thornhill, per Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on X, formerly Twitter. “I'm a great player. I can make a lot of plays. You can't really read into what the media's saying about me because if you sit back and watch the film of what I did in Cleveland, I had a lot of good plays.”
Thornhill spent last season with the Cleveland Browns before joining the Steelers this offseason, and will be among several players who will be tasked with trying to replicate the production that Fitzpatrick brought to the Steelers' defensive backfield over the course of his career there.
Of course, the headliner move of the offseason for the Steelers was the signing of free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who fans hope will provide a boost over what the team got out of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields a season ago.
Rodgers didn't exactly have a great season with the New York Jets in 2024, but there will still occasional flashes of his former MVP self at times, and Steelers fans are anxious to see whether this will be the year the team is finallly able to field a competent passing game to go along with its stellar defense.
The Steelers are set to kick off their season on September 7 on the road vs Rodgers' former team, the New York Jets.
