The status of Pittsburgh Steelers right guard David DeCastro ahead of their opening game against the New York Giants is still up in the air. The nine-year veteran has not been practicing recently due to a sustained lower-body injury.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also reported that he’s not expected to play on Monday night. However, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin remained mum on the situation and didn’t come close to saying DeCastro would play either.

“We’ll see what tomorrow holds as we begin our preparation week,” Tomlin said, via the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “I know he’s excited about getting back out there with his teammates as soon as possible.”

David DeCastro's absence for their opening game would be a big blow to the Steelers frontline as he's been onf of the best in the league. He also has invaluable experience on the gridiron, having started 111 out of 112 total appearances for the Steelers. His solid play has earned him a second-team All-Pro selection, two first-team All-Pro inclusions, and five Pro Bowl appearances.

Another elder statesman in two-time Super Bowl champion Stefen Wisniewski would slot in the starting right guard position in the event that DeCastro will be out for an extended time. The rest of the team would have to hope that they get to have their starter back in action as soon as possible.

Regardless of his status, Steelers fans can expect that head coach Tomlin would make the necessary adjustments that will give his team the best chance of winning come September 14.
