The Pittsburgh Steelers are enjoying a drama-free training camp, but not everyone has been available to reap the benefits. Head coach Mike Tomlin announced after their annual Family Fest night at Heinz Field, that wide receiver Diontae Johnson suffered a groin injury, via Steelers report Missi Matthews.
Johnson has spent much of the offseason injured. He missed much of the spring practices due to a hamstring injury, then, last Friday, a hip injury flared up. Though Tomlin didn't say his latest injury is serious, they are starting to pile up for the rookie.
The Steelers selected Johnson with the No. 66 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The former Toledo Rocket measures in at 5-foot-10 and 183 pounds and recorded a 4.53 40-time, 33.5-inch vertical, and 123-inch broad jump at the NFL Combine.
Article Continues BelowKnown for his cleanly ran routes and smooth release, Johnson had two productive seasons to cap off his college career. In 2017, he caught 74 passes for 1,278 yards and 13 touchdowns. In 2018, he reeled in 49 balls for a total of 761 yards and eight touchdowns.
It's unknown how long Johnson will be out, but the Steelers likely drafted him to compete for the No. 2 job alongside JuJu Smith-Schuster. The Steelers could use Johnson sooner rather than later. However, if he can't come back in time for regular season ball, there are suitable options behind him.
Veterans Donte Moncrief and Eli Rogers should compete for the job in the wake of Johnson's injury, as well as second-year receiver James Washington. For now, however, the Steelers have their eyes set on their preseason bout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday, August 9th.
