With the Pittsburgh Steelers' offseason officially underway, the biggest order of business is addressing the quarterback spot. Ben Roethlisberger is heading into retirement, leaving Pittsburgh with a quarterback vacancy. At the moment, two in-house options will be competing for the starting job.
Mike Tomlin said that the Steelers will consider all the options they have to find a new starting quarterback job for next season. At the moment, the competition to land the job will be between Dwayne Haskins and Mason Rudolph.
Haskins, who joined Pittsburgh this season after being cut from the Washington Football Team, shared his appreciation for the opportunity.
Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins on Zoom just now says he hasn't had his exit meeting with Mike Tomlin yet, but has talked to Kevin Colbert. The message? "They're giving me a chance to compete, a chance to start, and that's all I can ask for." pic.twitter.com/pAKAqTqT9J

Neither of Pittsburgh's options is a very strong one. Haskins, over the course of 16 games in two seasons with Washington, threw for 2,804 yards as well as 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. In 17 games with Pittsburgh over the past three seasons, Rudolph has recorded 2,336 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
The Steelers may not go right from Roethlisberger to their next franchise quarterback. Haskins and Rudolph have very little potential to become that, even though they are both on the younger side. Both of them are embarrassingly turnover prone and have shown no elite skills that can overcome that deficiency. Still, for the time being, the shot will be theirs to earn.
Haskins, who said that he idolizes Roethlisberger's toughness, will get the chance to succeed him as Pittsburgh's quarterback.
