After the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Kenny Pickett with the 20th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the question everybody has is if he'll be starting over Mitchell Trubisky come the new season.
Before Thursday's draft, many expected Trubisky to just compete with Mason Rudolph for Pittsburgh's starting QB spot. However, that all changed when the Steelers landed the top QB of the 2022 rookie class in Pickett.
When asked if there's any chance for Pickett to be their Week 1 starter in the new campaign, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin didn't hesitate and highlighted that it is definitely possible. The veteran tactician also agreed that the 23-year-old is the most pro-ready quarterback in the draft, which is something they really liked about him.
Article Continues Below“He certainly has a chance [to be Steelers' Week 1 starter]. I agree with that sentiment of his readiness from a professional perspective,” Tomlin explained.
“It was two things that really attracted us to him from a floor standpoint. We thought he had pro-level anticipation [and] we thought he had pro-level accuracy. Often times those are two variables that really require a lot of adjustment from a quarterback's standpoint. We felt he came ready-made in those ways, and hopefully that's an asset to him in terms of being able to compete and being ready if performance dictates it.”
By the looks of it, there will be an intense fight for the QB1 spot in Pittsburgh. Also, don't be surprised if you see Kenny Pickett and Mitchell Trubisky go on alternate starting roles as the Steelers begin their post-Ben Roethlisberger era.
The Steelers got a steal when they landed Pickett at no. 20. Sure enough, they'll be hoping his presence will help them find their QB of the future as soon as possible.
