There are just a little over 30 days left for Le'Veon Bell and the Pittsburgh Steelers to reach an agreement on a long-term extension, and so far there hasn't been any talk between the two sides towards a new deal according to The Athletic.
The deadline to sign the deal is July 16th, and if the two don't get a long-term deal done, Bell would have to play under the franchise tag. This could also mean this is also his last year in Pittsburgh.
The franchise tag for Bell this year would pay the former Michigan State star $14.5 million. Next year, the tag would cost the Steelers around $25 million, and for a running back, the chances are slim the team would pay him that.
The Steelers could decide to put the transition tag on him, but any other team could sign him to a long-term extension that the team probably won't be able to match.
Bell has stayed away from the team the entire NFL offseason, which comes as a shock to no one. Last year, he signed the franchise tag less than a week before the season, and don't expect much different to happen this year. Bell has made it clear that he wants a long-term deal, and the Steelers keep slapping on the franchise tag instead.
According to The Athletic, Bell wants a contract that pays him twice as much as any other running back, and the Steelers aren't budging. It remains to be seen how this will all pan out, but it isn't looking good right now.
