Coaches retire from the NFL all the time and for a variety of reasons, but the reason why Oakland Raiders offensive line coach Mike Tice says he’s ready to walk away deserves much attention.

According to Dan Barreiro of KFAN, one of the reasons the former Minnesota Vikings head coach is calling it a career is because players don’t want to be coached anymore.

Ouch.

Tice has been the offensive line coach for the Raiders for the last three seasons.  In 2016, he had one of the better units in the NFL (Raiders were sixth in rushing). The news broke over the weekend. But with a particular football game being played on Sunday, it went mostly unnoticed outside of the Bay Area. With the game done combined with the reason cited, it has started to gain some attention.

The reaction on Twitter has varied. Some called it an indictment of the program under Del Rio. Others wondered if Tice was just no longer effective. Others agreed with him. Some fans encouraged their favorite team to consider hiring him.

Whatever made him feel like he couldn’t do it anymore is unknown at this time. What will be more interesting than the reason itself will be the reactions of his former players.

Tice owns a career 32-33 record as head coach in the NFL, all games as the boss in Minnesota.
