It is no secret that the Los Angeles Rams have taken a rather cautious approach with their starters this preseason. It appears that will not change for some of their more key players, including running back Todd Gurley and quarterback Jared Goff.
Los Angeles is set to host the Houston Texans in their third exhibition game on Saturday. However, head coach Sean McVay indicated that Gurley will be held out of action once again, and Goff likely will be too via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk:
Rams head coach Sean McVay announced, per multiple reporters, on Thursday that Gurley will not play against the Texans on Saturday afternoon. With only the fourth preseason game left, Gurley is unlikely to play at all this summer and told reporters a short time after McVay spoke that he’s “kinda happy” not to be out there in exhibition action.
McVay's decision has come with mixed reviews. Although it is not uncommon for valuable players to be held out of the preseason, it is surprising to see the Rams take this approach given all the changes they have made this offseason. The decision to sit Gurley makes sense considering his status as the reigning Offensive Player of the Year and $60 million man. However, it would be a stretch to assume that Goff is a finished product. Furthermore, they welcomed a new addition to the receiving corps in Brandin Cooks and are still working to get their star-studded defense in order. That said, getting a start on the meshing process in a real-game situation could be beneficial for them.
However, it seems McVay is confident in where the Rams are leading up to the 2018 NFL season.
