New Orleans Saints rookie running back Alvin Kamara is optimistic that he’ll be able to take the field this coming Sunday when they host the visiting New York Jets for an inter-conference matchup, per Josh Katzenstein of The Times-Picayune has reported.

Kamara was taken out early in last Thursday’s showdown with the Atlanta Falcons after colliding with Falcons linebacker Deion Jones in the first quarter. The 22-year-old tailback was later diagnosed with a concussion and will have to clear concussion protocol before getting allowed to play again.

The good news for Kamara is that he has a longer period to recover since he sustained the injury in a Thursday night game and the Saints won’t play until Sunday.

Kamara’s importance to the Saints’ offense was very much pronounced in the Falcons game, as New Orleans was only able to generate 306 total yards, way fewer than the team’s season average of 400.7 per contest, with the rookie playing in only six snaps.

In 13 games played so far this year, the former Tennessee Volunteer has racked up 608 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 87 carries. He’s also a key contributor to the Saints’ passing attack, as he has 639 receiving yards and four touchdown grabs on 62 receptions.
