The NFL's Most Valuable Player race is always one of the most interesting phenomenons in sports. While the NBA generally has a clear winner, the NFL is not so cut and dry.
Take this year, for example.
There are numerous players who can legitimately win the award, with New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes, and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers representing three of the top choices.
Well, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network spoke to 22 NFL executives and asked for their opinion on the matter, and their vote was Brees.
Pelissero said that the executives had essentially boiled the MVP race down to two candidates: Brees and Mahomes (sorry, Chargers fans). Brees ended up being the No. 1 overall choice.
This certainly isn't a surprise.
On the year, Brees has thrown for 3,666 yards, 31 touchdowns, and five interceptions, leading the league with a completion percentage of 74.9 percent and a passer rating of 116.8.
The fact that the Saints also have the best record in the NFL at 12-2 helps Brees' cause, as well.
Oddly enough, in spite of his gaudy career numbers, Brees has never won the MVP award. As a matter of fact, he has never even come close, which seems unreal when you look at his lifetime 519 touchdown passes.
So, this could finally be the year that Brees adds that elusive trophy to his ever-growing list of accomplishments, which, of course, includes a Super Bowl MVP during the 2009-10 campaign.
New Orleans will host the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday before playing host to the Carolina Panthers in their final game of the regular season.
