It was a disappointing 2017 NFL season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by all accounts. However, it became evident that a solid backup quarterback will be a necessity for the Bucs moving forward.
Fortunately, a familiar face may be on the market this offseason. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Chicago Bears quarterback Mike Glennon could be on his way back to Tampa Bay.
Glennon showed plenty of promise his first three seasons in Tampa Bay where he largely served as a safety net behind quarterback Jameis Winston. As a result, the Bears then signed him to a three-year, $45 million deal to help stabilize their looming situation under center. Glennon had been slated to be their starter while former No. 2 overall pick Mitchell Trubisky potentially developed into a franchise quarterback.
However, his stint as the starter did not last long. Glennon threw for 833 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions before he was replaced by Trubisky after just four games. That said, he could be headed back to his NFL roots in Tampa Bay after a disastrous, albeit lucrative stint in Chicago.
Although Winston has proven to be the Bucs franchise quarterback moving forward, his injury last season demonstrates just how important the backup position is on this team. They had the benefit of having the veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick fill in and hold down the fort on multiple occasions. Unfortunately for Fitzpatrick, the recent reports suggest that Tampa Bay may be looking to go in a more youthful direction under center.
