Free agent quarterback Ryan Tannehill helped lead a miraculous regular-season and postseason run for the 2019 Tennessee Titans, ending short of Super Bowl LIV with a loss in the AFC Championship Game to the eventual-champion Kansas City Chiefs.
Tannehill nearly came out of nowhere for the Titans after former Heisman Trophy winning signal-caller and second overall pick from the 2015 NFL Draft Marcus Mariota saw on-field performance decline for Tennessee. The 31-year-old coming off his first Pro Bowl selection, Tannehill, was traded to the Titans by the Miami Dolphins last offseason and subsequently signed a one-year contract worth $7 million.
Now a free agent, what do the Titans do to keep the 2019 Comeback Player of the Year in Ryan Tannehill?
Article Continues BelowPer Jason La Canfora in CBS Sports on Ryan Tannehill:
It would be tough for Tennessee to see Ryan Tannehill leave so early after starting the last 10 games of the 2019 regular season and winning seven of them, then beating the vaunted New England Patriots and this past season's AFC No. 1 seed Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs before succumbing to the runaway train of Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
La Canfora is predicting the Titans use their transition tag, which can be used in conjunction with a franchise tag during the 2020 offseason, oddly enough, just this once. In 2019, the transition tag for the quarterback position was worth nearly $23 million—potentially making Ryan Tannehill a very good salary after his initial $7 million deal with Tennessee this time last year.
