The Tennessee Titans are expected to release safety Johnathan Cyprien sometime this week, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. However, this does not mean that the Titans are parting ways with Cyprien for good, as Schefter adds that Tennessee would like him back on a cheaper deal.
Cyprien did not play at all this past season as a result of a torn ACL he suffered during training camp.
He last appeared in 2017, starting 10 games and registering 57 tackles and a sack. He missed six games due to a hamstring injury.
The 28-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Florida International University, was originally selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the second round (33rd pick overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft.
He started immediately for the Jaguars, finishing with 102 tackles, a sack, an interception, a couple of forced fumbles and six passes defended during his rookie campaign.
The following year, Cyprien totaled 114 stops, and in 2015, he recorded 107 tackles, a pick, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Article Continues BelowCyprien then spent one more year with Jacksonville in 2016, racking up 126 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and four passes defended.
He proceeded to sign a four-year, $25 million contract with the Titans in March 2017.
Tennessee is coming off of a season in which it won nine games and narrowly missed the playoffs after losing a win-and-in game to the Indianapolis Colts during the final week of the 2018 campaign.
The Titans have made the playoffs just once since 2009 in spite of posting four winning seasons over that stretch.
