Houston Texans star outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney is set to enter the final year of his rookie deal.

Per Marc Berman of Fox26, Clowney's agent Bus Cook voiced that his client is looking to work out a new, long-term extension to remain with Houston beyond the 2018 campaign.

With Brian Gaine in as the new general manager, the process of working out a new deal could speed up with Clowney over the next few weeks At this current juncture, he is set to make $13.8 million in 2018, which does give the Texans some added time to work out an extension.

The 24-year-old has developed into one of the most dynamic players at his position over that couple of seasons, and he is coming off a career-high 9.5 sacks in 2017. He dealt with injury issues over his first couple seasons, but he was able to breakthrough in 2017 by playing in all 16 regular season games for the first time in his career. Doing so helped him earn back-to-back Pro Bowl selections and an All-Pro Second Team nod.

His value to Houston's future could become even greater due to three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt dealing with significant injuries over the last couple years. The 28-year-old's ability to stay healthy is a major concern for the organization, as he has missed 24 games over the last two seasons.

Clowney could be in line to receive a huge contract that would make him one of the top-paid players at his position. What may also have a major impact on the negotiation process is the type of deal that the Los Angeles Rams work out with their star defensive tackle, Aaron Donald. The four-time Pro Bowler appears to be in line to become the highest paid defensive player in the league.
