With the Super Bowl right around the corner, all eyes are on the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams. So much so, other franchises around the league could be looking to copy the roster construction of both teams participating in Sunday's game. Ron Rivera, head coach of the Washington Commanders, makes an interesting observation on his team's possible offseason plans after LA acquired Matthew Stafford.
According to Sports Illustrated, Rivera, “sees how the Matthew Stafford trade between the (Detroit) Lions and Rams helped reshape the league this year.” Los Angeles made a bold move to acquire the veteran quarterback last offseason and it's led to a Super Bowl appearance. A move like this would be monumental for the Commanders.
Washington hasn't had a competent quarterback since 2017 when the front office let Kirk Cousins go. Since then, the Commanders have struggled to find a franchise quarterback to lead the offense. Taylor Heinicke is exciting, but he's not the long-term answer. For that reason, we could see Ron Rivera make a move for a veteran quarterback in the 2022 offseason. Rivera provides his take on that Lions-Rams deal involving Stafford, per Sports Illustrated.
“I think what Detroit did was masterful. Why? Because of the picks they're going to have. They're building for the future. They went out and they got a new head coach a year ago and said, ‘Hey, let's see what we can build into.' So they let Matthew go and gave him an opportunity. Now, look where he is,” Commanders head coach Ron Rivera.
It was a brilliant trade for both franchises, as so far, both teams got exactly what they were looking for. We'll see if the Commanders can pull off a similar move, as it is exactly what this offense needs to truly improve. Keep a close eye on this franchise, as Ron Rivera might have a few tricks up his sleeve.
