Let's take a trip up north to the “Land of the Polar Bear,” as the St. Louis Blues will fight it out on the road at Rogers Place against the stingy Edmonton Oilers. With this game having major playoff implications, why don't we get down to the nitty-gritty and check up on our NHL odds series, where our Blues-Oilers prediction and pick will be made.

St. Louis enters Friday's hotly contested matchup winning two straight games against Vancouver, with the latter victory coming on the road. The Blues are 37-20-9 on the year and have 83 points, good for the fourth-best record and point total in the Western Conference.

The Oilers have also proved to be a team that should be viewed as dangerous, as their high-flying offensive assault averages 3.43 goals per game, ranking seventh among NHL teams. Edmonton is currently only two points behind St. Louis with 81 points, and have compiled a superb record of 38-25-5 throughout the 2021-2022 regular season.

Why the Blues Could Cover the Spread/Win

If there is a team out there that is up to the task in halting Edmonton's eight-game winning streak at home, look no further than a Blues squad that is known for punishing Pacific Division opponents this season with a 13-3-2 record. St. Louis' calling card is their power play prowess, as they excel in scoring goals with an extra man on ice and they smother opponents on the advantage by killing off 82.7% of power-play opportunities. Combine the excellency in that department with their witty ways in finding the net and keeping opposing teams out of the attacking zone, the Blues are one of the few teams that can be the last one standing this summer.

The Blues have more than enough talent on each line, as no St. Louis playmaker is as skilled as center Jordan Kyrou, who leads the club with 62 total points. It is hard to pick out a weakness on this team, as even the goaltending duo of Ville Husso and Jordan Bennington supply the Blues with amazing efforts night in and night out. The Blues are in for a tough test versus the Oilers, but St. Louis will have a great chance in covering the spread if they stick to their philosophy and don't play too aggressively against the impetuous Edmonton front lines. St. Louis as a whole is 36-30 ATS on the year.

Why the Oilers Could Cover the Spread/Win

Can the Oilers be overthrown at home? Most of the time and as of late, the simple answer is no. If Edmonton can find a way to reach the big dance in playing stellar hockey the rest of the way and securing home-ice advantage through at least the first playoff series in doing so, then good luck to the unfortunate souls going up against them in the first round. Although a few other teams from around the NHL possess better records at home, not many cities like Edmonton love their hockey like they do. Another victory at home would match the longest home winning run in franchise history and will continue to catapult the Oilers further and further up the Pacific Division standings. After going 7-2-1 in their last ten, Edmonton could not be cooking up wins at a higher temperature.

On paper, the Oilers may even in fact have the better roster when it comes to impact playmakers. The top two names on this team include Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, who have both combined for a whopping 197 points on the season. Don't be sleeping on Edmonton's goalkeeping abilities as well, as even goalie Mikko Koshkinen has shown flashes of brilliance with a season record of 25-10-3.

If there is any cause for concern, it's that the Oilers are only 32-36 ATS throughout the season.

Final Blues-Oilers Prediction & Pick

This is a difficult call to make, as this one could go in the favor of either side. In the end, the bottom line is that it's smart to ride the hot hand until you can't anymore. The Oilers are absolutely scalding in their home building. It is hard to imagine their streak comes to an end tonight. Take Edmonton and the -1.5 until they burn you.

Final Blues-Oilers Pick: Oilers -1.5 (+160)
