Why The Rangers Can Cover The Spread/Win

In four contests after the All-Star extended break for the Rangers, goaltender Igor Shesterkin has absolutely dominated and has solidified his spot as the runaway Vezina Trophy favorite. He's been standing on his head as of late and will look to get another start here tonight against a recently struggling Penguins team. Shesterkin is allowing just 1.98 goals against per game and is sporting a .940 save percentage on the year.

The offense in front of Shesterkin, however, will really have to step up their game and score more goals. In terms of covering the over, the Rangers are 17-32-2, converting at just 34%. They're known to keep games low scoring with their excellent defense, led by reigning Norris trophy winner Adam Fox, and outstanding goaltending. The Rangers will look to try and build a streak of their own as they try to capitalize on the losing streak of the Penguins today.

Why The Penguins Can Cover The Spread/Win

The Penguins have been in a small drought recently as they slide to 4-4-2 in February so far. Today will be the last game of their three-game homestand as the Penguins look to end it on a high note before heading out to Columbus tomorrow for another three-game road trip. All-Star goaltender Tristan Jarry has taken a noticeable dip in the last few games as he hasn't won a game since February 13th against the Devils. He's now averaging 2.38 goals against per game and a save percentage of .919 on the year. He should be looking to get another start here today as the Penguins try to bounce back and get back in the win column.

Final Rangers-Penguins Prediction & Pick

This game is looking to come down to who will be playing better defense. While the Penguins' offense can be explosive at times, their defense is what typically prevails. As for the Rangers, their goaltending has been magnificent all year long and I think they'll continue to shut down teams. Ultimately, I think the Rangers might grab the pesky two points here today, just purely based on their defensive play, and the fact that the Penguins have not looked good recently. However, I'm also going to sprinkle half of a unit on the Under 5.5 (+100) as well. Both picks are in plus money, which is always nice to see, so might as well take both.
