Novak Djokovic will not be playing in Toronto this year.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner announced he had made the decision to withdraw from the Canadian Open due to fatigue after coming off a Wimbledon final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz earlier this month.

“I have always enjoyed my time in Canada but after speaking with my team, we believe this is the right decision to take,” Djokovic said in a statement (via National Bank Open). “I would like to thank Karl Hale, the Tournament Director, for understanding this decision.

“I really hope I can return to Canada and Toronto in the coming years to play in front of great fans there.”

Djokovic — a five-time winner in Canada — hasn't played at the event since 2018. However, he missed last year's event due to his vaccination status.

“Of course, we're disappointed that Novak won't be playing at the National Bank Open this year,” Hale said. “He's an incredible player and one we know our fans were eager to watch at Sobeys Stadium.

“He will be missed but we still have a long list of sensational players confirmed for this year's event, including 41 of the top 42 players in the world.”

As a result, it looks like Djokovic will only be competing in the Cincinnati Open which will serve as his warm-up tournament leading up to the US Open.

That said, one man's withdrawal is another man's gain as Christopher Eubanks will now gain automatic entry into the Canadian Open.

The American is coming off an impressive run at Wimbledon where he made the quarterfinals and will look to continue impressing in Canada.

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, meanwhile, is also expected to feature at the Masters event.
