It seems like the Ohio State football team has elite quarterback talent every single season, but that wasn't the case last year. Kyle McCord was the starter for the Buckeyes a year ago, and while he is an above average QB, he didn't match up with CJ Stroud, Dwayne Haskins, JT Barrett, ETC. Ohio State is hoping to see better QB play this year, and the guys fighting for the job are Will Howard, Julian Sayin and Devin Brown.

Ohio State football gets their season going in a little less than a month, and they do have a QB competition on their hands. Everyone expects Will Howard to be the guy, but nothing is set in stone. Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day wants to make a decision on the starter in the next 7-10 days.

“I’m hoping it happens in the first week to 10 days,” Ryan Day said, according to an article from The Columbus Dispatch.

The earlier the better when it comes to picking a QB

Former Ohio State football defensive lineman Doug Worthington explained why it is so important to pick a quarterback early on. The QB is the most important player on the field, and when everyone knows who the starter is, it makes life easier.

“The quarterback has so much influence on so many individuals,” Doug Worthington said. “So if you’re not sure if he can get the job done or can command the huddle or get you out of sticky situations and make the throws, then you’re making everyone else’s job harder. The running back’s job, the lineman’s job all just got harder. If you have your quarterback, the tide of the sea calms down. Ryan Day can know the offensive tackle needs to give his quarterback an extra second of protection. Or when the wide receiver can read the high safety and make the right call.”

Worthington also believes that at this point, the coaches have a pretty good idea of who the starter is going to be. Yes, camp is just now starting, but they have seen these guys play. For Ohio State, it seems like it will likely be Will Howard, but other guys will get an opportunity to prove themselves.

“The coaching staff already has the two-deep in mind that will give them the best chance at winning,” Worthington added. “These guys are million-dollar coaches. They’re very aware of the level of talent and who is ready to play. I would say (the starters) are already written in erasable pen, not pencil. Coaches already have them projected, but they leave some room for the opportunity for other guys to creep up. But everybody has to be on one string. This camp is not as much about competition but running and playing fast.”

It would be a surprise if we see someone that isn't Howard trot out for the first snaps of the Ohio State football season, but you never know. The Buckeyes have a lot of talent in that QB room.
