I love pettiness in sports. It's so amazing that there's something out there (sport and competition) that is so powerful and has such a hold on us that it compels adults to act like children. I actually think it's healthy for the mind, body, and soul to get caught up in something larger than you and to allow it to make you act like a boastful fool. That's why what the Michigan baseball X account did to Ohio State football coach Ryan Day makes me so happy.

I'm not necessarily happy or unhappy that Michigan beat Ohio State this past weekend. But I am overjoyed that the rivalry between these two schools runs so deep and can get so petty that it resulted in something like this:

Allow me to provide some additional context for those of you reading along who are lost. The “reliever” here is newly appointed Michigan legend Sherrone Moore, who coached the Wolverines to the win. The third base dig is a shot at Ryan Day, and it dates back to 2021 when Jim Harbaugh got his first win over Ohio State. After the game, a dominant 42-27 Michigan win, Harbaugh made the following statement:

“Some people are born on third base and act like they’ve hit a triple, but they didn't.” (h/t Christopher Breiler of Sports Illustrated)

Though Jim Harbaugh never mentioned Ryan Day by name, the assumption was that the “born on third” comment was a way for Harbaugh to take a shot at Day for taking credit for what Urban Meyer, Day's predecessor, had built at Ohio State. Meyer took over at Ohio State in 2012, and Day didn't join the Buckeyes staff until 2017.

Here's my hope for how this plays out, and if anyone involved with the Ohio State baseball team or the team's X account comes across this, just give me a nod (@SonnyCG on X). You've gotta fire back. There are plenty of jokes that can be made right now. Hit 'em right back with a…

“Well, the only reason you needed a reliever to come in on Saturday is because your starting pitcher got caught stealing home… I mean signs. He got caught stealing signs.”

Or something along those lines. All I know is this is not the time to stop the pettiness.
