Manchester City and Liverpool are set to add another installment to their thrilling rivalry, as the two sides will square off on Premier League matchday 32.

This upcoming clash between the two Premier League powerhouses will once again feature a tactical chess match revolving around managers Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp. Overall, the two Premier League-winning managers have faced off a total of 22 times, with each coming away with nine wins.

Guardiola sure has had plenty of memorable rivalries over his managerial career. When asked during a pre-match press conference to compare his encounters with the Jose Mourinho-led Real Madrid and his clashes against the Klopp-led Liverpool, he noted one striking difference.

“We play many times, more times,” Guardiola said. “Jose is an exciting manager, and we had the rivalry in Barcelona. In five years here, we play many times, all the times we were close. I faced in Munich with Jurgen. How we set up the teams here we were close many times. Every season except the year we got 100 points and the year they got 99, we were tight.”

When Guardiola decides to call it a career as a manager, he will look back on his duels with Liverpool and reminisce on just how Manchester City and the Reds pushed each other in all competitions.

“When I retire and watch and play golf, I [will] remember here the biggest rivalry was Liverpool,” Guardiola said. “When you achieve 100 points and 98 points, you need someone to push from behind to be so close. You have to make another step. … The most credit I give is consistency through the years.”

From their respective runs at Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to now being the class of the Premier League, Guardiola and Klopp sure have provided brilliant tactical showcases.

Liverpool has won one of its eight last meetings against Manchester City in all competitions, with its last such victory coming three years ago. A win for Klopp and his side on matchday 32 would push them to the top of the standings, while a defeat could possibly put an end to their late-season surge in the league.
