The Baltimore Orioles endured an extremely difficult 2021 season. However, they had a couple of feel good stories on their team. For starters, first baseman/outfielder Trey Mancini made his return after battling cancer. Mancini's story was highly inspirational and he ended up hitting over .250 with 21 home runs on the season as well.

But another story was recently made public in regards to outfielder Cedric Mullins. Mullins broke out in 2021 to the tune of a .291 batting average and 30 home runs while scoring 91 total runs. It turns out that Mullins was also battling his own health issues last year, but waited to divulge any of the information because he wanted all of the support to go towards Mancini. Mullins reportedly had surgery in the 2020 offseason as he battled Crohn's disease.

He could have easily announced that he was dealing with the illness prior to the 2021 season and nobody would have blamed him. But his unselfishness led to Mancini receiving the praise for his return from cancer. Mullins might have benefitted from people not knowing as well, as the lack of distraction led to him being selected to his first career all-star team. The Baltimore outfielder posted one of the best all-around seasons in the game and even finished ninth in MVP voting. He also received a Silver Slugger award for his outstanding performance.

The fact that he and Mancini play for the same team automatically makes Baltimore a team worth rooting for despite their lackluster record. Mullins will look to replicate his 2021 performance with another exceptional season in 2022.
