21 year NFL veteran kicker Phil Dawson has announced his retirement from the league. Dawson will retire as a part of the Cleveland Browns after signing a one-day contract with the team. In 2018, he played with the Arizona Cardinals.
Dawson played in 305 regular-season NFL games, including 215 with the Browns. He ranks seventh all-time in games played, 16th in field goal percentage (83.8%), eighth in field goals made (441), and 11th in points scored (1,847). He started his career in Cleveland in 1991 and stayed for 14 seasons. In his last season with the team, he earned a Pro-Bowl nod.
On retiring as a Brown, Dawson said, according to ClevelandBrowns.com:
“To have the opportunity to come back home and retire with the organization and the city that I love is incredibly meaningful to me. It only seems right to have the opportunity to do this with the fans that have been so good to me and my family.”
“We are thrilled that Phil Dawson wanted to come back and retire as a Cleveland Brown, ” said Dee and Jimmy Haslam. “He epitomizes the characteristics that we look for in our players – hardworking, professional, consistent, and he was a pillar in the community. He is a great example for all current and future Browns.”
At 44 years old in 2018, Dawson was amongst the oldest NFL players. His retirement was expected after going on injured reserve in late November 2018. Though a former San Francisco 49er and an Arizona Cardinal, Dawson's career will be remembered by his time in Cleveland. And, the “Phil Dawson rule;” if a ball goes through the uprights off a bounce, it counts.
