The Green Bay Packers made some very significant changes in their coaching staff this offseason. One such change was to bring back Joe Philbin as the team’s offensive coordinator in place of Edgar Bennett.

Packers.com’s Mike Spofford reports that Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a big fan of bringing back Philbin, with whom he had a close relationship previously.

“Joe and I were very close when he was with us the first stint,” Rodgers said. “He’s a fantastic guy, great coach. I’m excited to get back working with him. But again, change is hard in this business. It’s difficult when you lose not only friends that are teammates but friends that are coaches as well. The only constant you can count on in this game is it’s going to change every single year.

“As we’ve seen in the past, change has been good for us. (There’ll be a) new influx of energy with the defensive staff, and I’m excited about having Joe back.”

Philbin served as the Packers’ offensive coordinator for five years from 2007-2011. He was Rodgers’ first OC after he finally took over as the team’s starting quarterback in 2008. He also helped Rodgers win his first of two MVP awards in 2011. Rodgers has his sights set on winning a third MVP, and Philbin will be integral to that as well.

Philbin moved on after that season to take over as the Miami Dolphins head coach. He spent four years in charge in Miami and spent the last two seasons as the offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts.

Although the two have not worked together for some time, the relationship they formed during Philbin’s first stint with the team should provide a strong foundation for this first season back in Green Bay.
