The Green Bay Packers have a reputation for treading lightly in the free agent market, but when they identify the right guy to fill a need, Ted Thompson has no problem pulling the trigger. Take former Chicago Bears and New England Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett, for example.

That was the case again on Wednesday morning, as the Packers are set to sign former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks to a one-year deal that could be worth $5 million, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport clarified that Brooks will get a $3.5 million base from the Packers, with a chance to make $5 million.

Brooks spent the last eight years of his career as a pillar of San Francisco's defense, making one Pro Bowl in 2013. The Niners released him last week, and early rumors connected him to his eventual destination of Green Bay.

Thompson likes to sign veterans to short-term contracts to fill needs immediately, and that's exactly what Brooks does.

Clay Matthews and Nick Perry have excelled off the edge for years, but both have dealt with a long list of injuries. Adding Brooks to the rotation will decrease the workload for both Matthews and Perry, and should either go down for a game or two, the Virginia product can slot right in.
