The Green Bay Packers received terrible news on Wednesday, as Aaron Rodgers has tested positive for COVID-19. To make matters worse, it appears as though he is unvaccinated, which means he's in line to miss at least 10 days.
Jordan Love will take over as the starting quarterback in Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs. However, with Rodgers ruled out, the Packers must find a backup quarterback. According to Adam Schefter, Green Bay is bringing in Blake Bortles to potentially join the roster.
Bortles is a veteran quarterback who played a valuable starting role for the Jacksonville Jaguars. It didn't work out and he's been searching for a job ever since. However, in terms of free-agent options, Blake Bortles is at the top of the list.
This is nothing more than a safety precaution for Green Bay. The Packers need a second quarterback on the roster in case Jordan Love goes down with an injury. Having another veteran on the sideline won't hurt Love's development either. Bortles might not fully know the playbook, but he can provide some coaching on the sideline for Jordan Love.
Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers won't be allowed to attend the game, as he must quarantine. It'll be interesting to see how the Packers play against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs have been awful this year, making this a decent matchup for the Packers' prospect. Between Love receiving some playing time and Blake Bortles on the sideline, Green Bay still has a chance to win this game.
We'll see how it plays out, but with Aaron Rodgers missing 10 days, this could be a rough couple of weeks for the Packers. Luckily, he should return for Week 10 against the Seattle Seahawks who have one of the worst defenses in the league.
For now, Green Bay will rely on Jordan Love as he'll have a chance to prove himself to the fanbase.
