Packers coach Mike McCarthy says Green Bay must ‘take advantage’ of Ty Montgomery’s skills

The Green Bay Packers are still trying to figure out how to use Ty Montgomery in the offense with head coach Mike McCarthy knowing the team must take advantage of his skills.

Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery showed plenty of promise in his first official year at his new position. Unfortunately, lingering injuries throughout the season ultimately ended his 2017 campaign early.

However, it appears head coach Mike McCarthy is still enamored with what Montgomery brings to the table. According to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, McCarthy plans on putting his skill set to good use in the 2018 NFL season:

“We have to take advantage of Ty's skills, and there's no question about that,” McCarthy said. “The offense is suited for that.”

It goes without saying that Green Bay has done what it can to help beef up the personnel surrounding quarterback Aaron Rodgers this season. This saw the arrival of tight end Jimmy Graham counter the departure of wide receiver Jordy Nelson. Meanwhile, it seems that Montgomery was part of the team's plans all along.

There is certainly plenty of truth to McCarthy's comments. The Packers selected him with the 94th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft as a wide receiver out of Stanford. He remained as such during his rookie campaign and was virtually non-existent in the offense. However, that changed during the 2016 NFL season when he filled in at running back for the injured Eddie Lacy and James Starks and never looked back.

That said, his pedigree as a receiver makes him a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. His versatility also allows Green Bay to use him on all three downs essentially. Unfortunately, he still has yet to prove that he is capable of handling the rigors that come with carrying such a large workload.
