After selecting Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft last month, could the Green Bay Packers truly trade star gunslinger Aaron Rodgers? The answer is a very likely no, but former agent Joel Corry sees parting from the Super Bowl XLV MVP as the right move for the future.

“A trade in 2022 seems more likely than in 2021. The Packers would pick up $22.648 million cap room by removing Rodgers' $39.852 million cap number in 2022 from the equation. There would be $17.204 million of dead money in 2022 from Rodgers' departure. Just like with a trade in 2021, Rodgers' $28.352 million cap number in 2023 would come off Green Bay's books.”

So, if the Packers do trade Rodgers, who turns 37 in Dec. 2020, it could happen down the road in order to provide the Green Bay franchise a means to open up salary cap space and help Love under center.

Ironically, fans and pundits alike have been calling on the Packers' front office to help Rodgers in the present. Many believed that first-round selection could have been used on an offensive lineman or wide receiver, strengthening the former University of California, Berkley product's pass targets.

The only part of the equation is Love's salary. Even though the neophyte signal-caller hasn't called a snap for the Packers yet — and could very well not appear on the gridiron in his first year or two as long as Rodgers is in town — being a first-round pick, Love's contract will eventually require a growing share of the salary cap.

Trading Rodgers might have to happen after all for the Packers, but if it happens, it won't be for at least a year or two.
