Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly decided to call it a career after announcing his retirement this offseason. It seems the decision has now become official.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Panthers have placed Kuechly on the reserve/retired list:

Panthers star LB Luke Kuechly officially went on Reserve/Retired list today, source said.

Although the news deals a crushing blow to Panthers fans, there are certainly a few silver linings.

First and foremost, Kuechly will get to prioritize his long-term health after dealing with his fair share of concussions throughout his career. He managed to fit the billing as a former top-10 pick by being named a seven-time All-Pro and Pro Bowler while capping his Hall of Fame resume with NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2013 during an illustrious eight-year tenure.

The other positive that comes with Kuechly's designation is that it frees up some much-needed cap space for Carolina to fill the other notable voids on the roster. Reports indicate that they will now have $13.5 million to work with following the signing of cornerback Eli Apple.

The Panthers did what they can to secure a short-term replacement for Kuechly in the form of linebacker Tahir Whitehead. While the veteran certainly boasts enough experience to help alleviate the loss, it is safe to assume that this group will need to be a point of emphasis along with defensive tackle and offensive line.

Fortunately, it appears Carolina at least has the resources to fill some of the gaps in their personnel while signing their remaining draft picks.
