The Carolina Panthers finally got their quarterback; however, it's not Baker Mayfield as what fans previously expected. Instead, the team decided to take another route and selected Matt Corral in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Carolina traded up to get Corral, whom they selected with the 94th overall pick. They sent away their No. 137 pick and a 2023 third-rounder to the New England Patriots for the said selection.

After Corral's drafting, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reported why the Panthers decided to pass on a Mayfield trade with the Cleveland Browns and took a gamble on a rookie QB instead, noting that they didn't want to pay the salary of the disgraced QB.

While the decision was a bit of a shocker, it has been a move long considered by the Panthers. As reported earlier, the fact that some QBs fell on the board made Carolina re-consider their options. Besides. the only way they would trade for Baker Mayfield was if the Browns would eat up a huge chunk of his salary–which, clearly, Cleveland refused to do.

The development is a huge blow to Mayfield's trade value that is already not high in the first place. With how things are trending, the Browns might end up with Mayfield until the 2022 season starts unless they release him or give in to the demands of interested suitors–if there is any.
