Former New England Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe will be taking the field one more time for an AFC Championship Game this upcoming Sunday.

According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, Bledsoe will be an honorary captain for New England on Sunday when the Patriots host the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Championship Game at Gillette Stadium.

After Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady was listed as questionable on the team's injury report today for the first time in his playoff career, Bledsoe joked that he would be good to go if head coach Bil Belichick needed him as insurance.

“The ball still flies off my hand pretty good, believe it or not,” Bledsoe said. “I’m coaching some high school football out here (in Oregon), and every now and then I’ll go play some scout team. If they need me, I’ll be ready. I’ll borrow Julian Edelman’s No. 11 jersey and go out there and sling it around. I figure I’ve got one or two good plays in me, and that’s about it.”

A four-time Pro Bowler, Bledsoe was drafted first overall by the Patriots out of Washington State University in the 1993 NFL Draft. Bledsoe helped lead the Patriots during the 1996-97 season to the franchise's second Super Bowl berth with a 20-6 victory over the Jags in the 1996 AFC Championship Game. Unfortunately, fate wasn't on New England's side that year as they lost 35-21 to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXI.

Bledsoe was New England's starting quarterback from 1993 until 2001 when he was injured in the team's second game of the season against the New York Jets. Brady subbed in for him and the rest is history, as the Patriots would later go on to finally win their first Super Bowl in franchise history against the St. Louis Rams that season.

However, Bledsoe subbed in for an injured Brady in the 2001 AFC Championship Game on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bledsoe would go on to lead the Pats to a 24-17 upset of the Steelers and place New England in their third Super Bowl.

When he was contacted about being an honorary captain for the Pats, Bledsoe happily rearranged his schedule to make a trip to Foxboro.

“It’s a great honor to come out and be an honorary captain for the best organization in all of sports,” Bledsoe said. “Mr. Kraft has always been so kind to me and my family. It was a great feeling to get that call from him the other day to ask me to come out and do that. So I changed some plans, and we’ll be there.”
