The New England Patriots suffered a bit of a blow recently with the departure of wide receiver Josh Gordon. However, free agent linebacker Marquis Flowers is still not worried about the state of the offense.
Losing a player of Gordon's caliber would be a severe blow for most teams. Flowers had a rather optimistic take on the Patriots' offense moving forward, via Twitter
“Y’all crazy if y’all think New England not gonna be ok y’all tripping because as I send this tweet out Chris Hogan somewhere Wide open in Boston.”
There is certainly plenty of truth to Flowers' comments. The Patriots may have come up short in their loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 15, however, the offense did produce one notable highlight after setting up wide receiver Chris Hogan for a wide open 63-yard touchdown. There was more than 19 yards of separation between Hogan and the nearest defender meaning he could have safely backpedaled into the end zone.
It is no secret that quarterback Tom Brady is more than capable of getting the best out of his receiving corps. He has made a career out of turning no-name players into sudden stat-busters overnight. His skill set combined with head coach Bill Belichick's ability to make adjustments has largely carried the Patriots franchise for nearly the past two decades.
Flowers got to see it up close as an integral part of the defense during last year's Super Bowl run.
Regardless, it is still far-fetched to assume that New England can make a run with the receiving corps they have now. Gordon was undoubtedly the most talented wideout on the roster. Meanwhile, tight end Rob Gronkowski has struggled to stay off the injury report this season.
It is safe to say that the Patriots will need much more than wide receiver Julian Edelman to make a return to the Super Bowl.
